-
How often will I need to come in?
That depends on your goals and your therapeutic needs! During your first appointment, Dr. Matthew will outline a proposed treatment plan including an estimate of the frequency and duration of treatment needed. Performing at-home exercises can help speed up your course of treatment. Please keep in mind that personal factors such as scheduling restraints for appointments, extended travel, or similar restrictions may impact the duration of treatment needed.

Is my physical therapy appointment covered by insurance?
Foundation Physical Therapy is out-of-network with all insurance companies, but many of our patients find that all or some of their treatment is eligible for reimbursement. You can read more here about how we work with insurance companies and why we’ve chosen to do business this way.
-
How do I pay for my appointment?
All patients are required to have a valid credit card on file. Payment is due at the time of service (for in-person visits and telehealth). All patients' claims to insurance providers will be submitted by Foundation Physical Therapy. Patients may also use their HSA and FSA balance towards treatment.
-
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes, established patients may choose telehealth for select appointments. All evaluations are conducted in person.
-
What’s the difference between a consultation, an evaluation, and a treatment?
A consultation is a free, 15-minute discovery call designed to answer basic questions about physical therapy and how our clinic works. Consultations do not include any type of evaluation of a patient’s condition, although we will ask questions about your health concerns.
An evaluation is a 30-minute, in-person appointment that allows Dr. Matthew to perform a physical assessment. At the end of an evaluation, Dr. Matthew will make recommendations regarding a treatment plan and at-home exercises, but he will not perform any treatments as part of the evaluation. Evaluations are designed for people who are not sure if they would like to pursue physical therapy or who want to learn more about Dr. Matthew’s recommendations before committing to treatment. Evaluation is a way of teaching you about your injury and/or body compensations and the best plan of care for you.
Treatment is performed during a regular, 60-minute appointment. If you are ready to begin treatment for an injury or wellness concern, you do not need to schedule a separate evaluation; it will be included as part of your initial appointment.

What happens during a physical therapy appointment?
We offer one on one appointments that focus on your unique movement patterns to better understand how you've learned your body. We'll start the first appointment by assessing your pain, mobility, and overall health goals, then check your strength, flexibility, balance, and range of motion. From there, we'll develop a customized program that will include exercises, stretches, manual therapy (hands-on treatment), and education about posture or body mechanics. Each session is tailored to your progress, so the specific exercises may look different from visit to visit. Our treatment appointments are 60 minutes long. Throughout your time here, we will utilize the knowledge you gain about your body to progress your treatment and focus on the wins along the way!
After Your Appointment
-
Is it normal to be sore after a physical therapy session?

-
How do I submit a claim to my insurance company?

-
Do I have to do at-home exercises?
You get to do at-home exercises! Exercising at home helps you apply what you learned during your appointment. We provide tailored reflections to patients upon request for four visits at no charge. These reflections help you build a better you between appointments and take into account the information you give us about your schedule and ability to commit to an at-home program. Patients are welcome to take pictures of the exercises that we worked on during their treatment to aid in performing the at-home exercises properly.
-
Are there things I should avoid between sessions?
That depends on your injury, your goals, and your treatment plan. Dr. Matthew will go over any things to avoid with you during your appointment.
-
What if I have a question between appointments?
That’s one of the benefits of working one-on-one with a conscious health care provider! Established patients are welcome to call or text between appointments with questions about their treatment.
Understanding What Physical Therapy Is and How It Works
-
What exactly does a physical therapist do?
A physical therapist (PT) is a licensed healthcare professional who educates people about their bodies, bodily awareness, and bodily compensations to help people better move through life. Physical therapists use hands-on techniques, guided exercises, and specialized equipment to treat musculoskeletal issues, improve mobility, and educate patients about how to prevent future injuries.
-
How long will I need physical therapy?
The length of physical therapy varies for each patient depending on their injury, factors that may have led to the injury, and the patient's level of neuroplasticity. Dr. Matthew will evaluate your progress at each visit and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. The ultimate goal is to help educate you about how to achieve lasting results and increase your bodily awareness so that you can return to normal activities as quickly and safely as possible.
-
How soon will I start to see improvement?
You should begin to notice small improvements soon after your first few sessions of physical therapy. Dr. Matthew’s goal is to provide education that you can implement right away, leading to small improvements after each appointment. Lasting change typically takes consistency over several weeks. The timeline depends on factors like the severity of your condition, your overall health, and how closely you follow your home exercise program.
Specific Conditions and Procedures
-
How soon after surgery can I start physical therapy?
Your surgeon and health care team will work together to make that decision with you. Recovery times for patients vary depending on surgery type, location, and intensity. Post-surgical patients are encouraged to have a doctor’s referral before beginning treatment.
-
Can physical therapy help with balance issues or dizziness?
Yes. Physical therapy is highly effective for balance issues and certain types of dizziness, including vertigo. Specialized vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) can retrain your inner ear and nervous system to reduce dizziness, improve coordination, and lower your risk of falls.
-
Will physical therapy help with sports injuries?
Absolutely. Dr. Matthew is fully trained in treating sports injuries such as sprains, strains, and tendonitis. PT increases bodily awareness, allowing for patients to address how they generate force through movement and how to best use that force to generate power, move efficiently, and move with improved coordination. Understanding how you move helps address the root cause of your injury so you return to your sport stronger and with less risk of re-injury.
-
Can physical therapy prevent surgery?
In many cases, yes. Strengthening the muscles around a joint, improving mobility, and reducing inflammation can sometimes eliminate the need for surgery altogether. Correcting movement patterns can also delay the need for surgery. Even if surgery is still necessary, physical therapy can improve outcomes, decrease your recovery time, and help you correct movement patterns that may have contributed to prior injuries.
-
Can physical therapy fix chronic pain?
Physical therapy can significantly reduce pain, improve function, and help you manage symptoms long-term. Many patients with chronic pain conditions find that physical therapy is a safe and effective pain management strategy in place of or in conjunction with other treatment methods.
-
Can physical therapy help avoid future injuries?
By improving your strength, flexibility, balance, and body mechanics, physical therapy reduces stress on joints and muscles, lowering your risk of recurring injuries. Dr. Matthew can also provide specific awareness training to build confidence and knowledge you need so that you can move without the fear of injury.
-
What is dry needling? Is it the same as acupuncture?
Dry needling is a physical therapy technique that uses very thin, sterile needles inserted into tight or knotted muscles. By targeting these points, dry needling helps release tension and reduce pain leading to improved movement. While it may look similar to acupuncture, the two are not the same. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on restoring energy flow along specific pathways in the body. Dry needling, on the other hand, is rooted in modern Western medicine and anatomy. It can reduce the brain's stimulation and perception of pain.
Dry needling can be an effective treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and neural issues. Patients often find relief and even recovery from back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, shoulder tension, sports injuries.
A doctor’s referral is required for dry needling.
-
What if I’m not injured; is physical therapy still for me?
Definitely! You don’t need an injury to benefit from physical therapy. PT can be a valuable part of your wellness routine and an effective way to understand your body's compensations. Whether you want to improve athletic performance, maintain mobility as you age, or simply move more comfortably, physical therapy can teach you how to grow in your awareness of your body.
